QEM Solutions provided PPS Pipeline Systems with two Engineers, a full time Assistant Engineer and part time Quality Engineer for the Llanwrin to Dolgellau Pipeline Project.
The Project consisted of 24km of 114mm welded steel pipeline running from Machynlleth to Dolgellau in the counties of Powys and Gwynedd, Wales.
Although only 4”, the project had many engineering, safety, and environmental issues to overcome including; routing issues, steep side slope working, mountainous terrain and considerable environmental constraints (SSSI & SAC working). Details can be found below.
For the Quality Engineer, works consisted of quality management duties identified below and providing general support to a variety of personnel including the SHEQ Managers, Project Engineer and the Project Management Personnel.
Main responsibilities included;

Setting up of the integrated management system for the project including Document Control and SHEQ management.

Providing IT support when required

Development of Quality Management Plans including Inspection & Test plans.

Technical Writing – method statements, procedures, risk assessments for a wide variety of operations

Assisting with production, collation and approval of weld procedures

Maintenance of welder qualifications register

Monitoring of welding consumables and certification

Collation of calibration certificate and maintenance of registers

Assisting with project internal auditing and attending external ISO certification & Achilles audits as required

Collation of Test End Packages to E56 Specification

Assisting Project Engineer with Hydrostatic Testing calculations and profile.

Management of Project Handover Documentation (NG - NSBP007) including liaison with the client for Data book approval, identifying sources & streams of information, managing the collation of the documentation from all Departments of the Project Team, monitoring progress against the project programme and assisting with as-built red line mark up production and following drawing appraisal sub-contractor management.
The Assistant Engineer was initially brought on to assist the Quality Engineer with the completion of method statements and risk assessments, however he soon became an integral part of the site engineering team, where he built on his knowledge of pipelines by assisting with CAD drafting, site surveying, development of construction schedules and helping the Crossings Engineer where possible.
