David Hardie Engineering has been operating in Dumfries and Galloway for over 25 years. Its vibrant customer base across south-west Scotland particularly values the company’s commitment, hard work and ‘can-do’ ethos.

The company provides services in civils contracting, construction, and infrastructure works, and has the resource to plan and deliver high-value projects, founded on the competency and experience of its company team.

Because David Hardie Engineering provides services in such high-risk disciplines and at such scale, maintaining high standards of quality and compliance are key to its safe operation, its reputation and client trust.

Understanding the challenge

David Hardie Engineering contracted us to help them secure certification in ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001. These vital standards embed best practice and compliance in quality management, environmental management, and occupational health and safety management.

Securing these standards at the same time as keeping daily operations running smoothly can be challenging, especially for small or medium-sized enterprises, but delivers valuable competitive advantage and consumer respect in the marketplace.

Our approach and implementation

We conducted a gap analysis on current systems to establish which areas of the business required input before they could achieve compliance with each of the required standards. David Hardie Engineering were able to make the necessary internal changes that addressed these challenges.

After our review, they then went to external audit and successfully achieved accreditation in all three standards.

Having secured accreditation, we were then asked to provide monthly surveillance that would help ensure the company remained consistently compliant.

Primary objectives

  • To ensure the system at David Hardie Engineering met the requirements of ISO 9001:2015, ISO 14001:2015 and ISO 45001:2018
  • To review and make recommendations on the business risk assessments, PESTEC (political, economic, social, technological, environmental, and competitive factors), needs and expectations of interested parties, and organisational context
  • To review the environmental risk assessments, opportunities, and lifecycle perspective, and identify updates that could improve process
  • To review the legislation index and carry out compliance checks against key higher-risk areas of legislation
  • To carry out an in-depth programme of internal audits, including reviewing order information against core procedures, and compiling a summary of audit results to show ISO compliance
  • To ensure David Hardie Engineering was made immediately aware of any issues or non-conformances found from internal audits and what actions were needed to resolve them
  • Carrying out walkarounds and visits to audit the premises and other sites against quality and environmental best practice
  • Amending and reviewing templates, policies and other system documentation
  • To provide monthly surveillance within allocated time and on budget

Impact and outcomes delivered

Since 2017, David Hardie Engineering has consistently passed its audits for accreditation in ISO 9001, ISO 14001, and ISO 45001.

Regular surveillance has made onward recertification much easier, securing competitive edge and mutual trust with the company’s existing and new suppliers and customers. Working closely with our team has also advanced understanding of legal obligations, meaning people at David Hardie Engineering are better equipped to support and prove compliance too.

Securing accreditation and locking in the reassurance of continued recertification has allowed the company to thrive in the marketplace. In addition, by removing the distracting ‘scramble’ that can so often happen pre-audit, our support has allowed David Hardie Engineering to get on with its real job: delivering sought-after and high-quality civil engineering contracting across south-west Scotland.

QEM’s advice and knowledge have been invaluable to us in keeping us aware of legislation changes and ensuring our continued compliance.
