Energy transition

Supporting energy providers across the UK to explore, develop solutions, and test the transition to hydrogen as an alternative to natural gas.

Natural gas dominates domestic energy demand, supplying 66% of total domestic energy needs to over 22 million UK homes in 2021. There is, therefore, a huge incentive to find a cleaner alternative to natural gas that can be stored in volumes able to meet consumer swings in demand.

We help gas networks as they collaborate on their ambitious energy transition programmes, particularly at the complex start-up phase of projects of this scale. Drawing on our network of subject-matter experts, we are able to support companies and their people at every stage, from inception, through operations, to testing and regulatory reporting.

The case for hydrogen

While natural gas produces carbon dioxide when burnt, hydrogen does not. All major research points, therefore, to hydrogen being pivotal in assisting the UK achieving its Net Zero 2050 goals. Alongside carbon capture and the development of hydrogen-ready domestic appliances, hydrogen could also be used in the UK’s existing gas network, making it relatively cost-effective. Conversion could not only respond to legislative commitments but ensure that the public and industry can still benefit from continuity of gas supply.

Our part in the hydrogen transition

We have been contributing to several major hydrogen projects across the UK for some time. Gas networks are collaborating on the research, build, operation, and testing of new hydrogen and repurposed networks under the ‘Gas Goes Green’ programme.

Why QEM?

Experienced interface with regulatory bodies

We have considerable experience in working transparently with, and reporting to, the UK Government, to Ofgem, and other regulatory stakeholders on high-profile programmes such as hydrogen transition.

Cross-sector innovative thinking

Our rich network of professional resource from a broad range of sectors brings an innovative ‘solution mindset’ to the demanding and complex programmes that lie within energy transition.

Diverse resource pools

We draw on our network to provide disparate levels of resource that can rarely all be found ‘in-house’ – from industry subject-matter experts, to project managers, engineers, field operatives, administration support and software as a service. Our resource provision is scalable and responsive to evolving programme needs.

Support for people

Collaborative programmes at such scale as that of hydrogen transition exert huge demands on companies and their people. We understand what it is like to work under the pressures of deliverables, reporting and public scrutiny, and we strive to lessen both the workload and the stress that goes with these.
